Cheap Travel - How To Save On Your Budget In Stockholm
Cheap travel and Sweden: many people think they don't go together. But even if you are on a limited budget, you can enjoy Stockholm. In the past this Sweden was indeed one of the most expensive holiday destinations you could think of. But things have changed. For US travelers Sweden is now one of the most affordable travel destinations in Western Europe, thanks to the fact that the Swedes did not switch to the euro - their currency is still the Swedish krona. Prices are now on a similar and often even lower level with those in most other Western European countries. So Sweden is not only for the rich anymore. And you can make your Stockholm vacation even more affordable. Here are our cheap travel tips for those on a limited budget: - Book ahead, book online. Whether it’s a rental car, hotel or plane ticket, online booking is in most cases the cheapest option.
- There are not many budget hotels, but hotels do give discounts if you stay there in weekends or in the summer seasons.
- Consider booking a room (or a dormitory bed) in a hostel. Facilities of Stockholm hostels are excellent.
- Hire a summer cottage in the archipelago if you want to stay for a week or so. But make sure there is a ferry boat or bus in the area before you book.
- Get a Stockholm Card to save on public transport, museums and attractions in Stockholm – probably the best cheap travel tip if you don’t plan to leave Stockholm.
- Although guided sightseeing bus tour can be great, you can also see much of the city if you take regular bus lines.
- If you want to travel by train within Sweden, purchase a Scanrail pass and take a night train. Sleeping cars in Sweden are clean, quiet and cheaper than a hotel room. Your travel budget will love it.
- Have your main meal at lunchtime. Restaurants serve dagens rätt between 12 and 2 PM. This is the low-priced dish of the day. The overall quality is very good. If you order the same menu at night, you pay twice as much.
- If you are camping or staying in a hostel you may want to cook your own meal. That means: self catering and shopping! German discounter Lidl has a store at Sveavägen, right in the heart of the city. Swedish chain Hemköp has one at Sergels Torg. The omnipresent ICA chain is a little more expensive.
Don’t buy what you don’t need. This sounds obvious, but for souvenir addicts it’s the best cheap travel tip they can get.
