Top-10 Museums In Stockholm

Nordiska Museet or Nordic Museum, Stockholm

Museums in Stockholm are just a little different. Why?

  • First, there are about 100 to choose from.
  • Second, the variety of displayed subjects is immense – from art to toys.
  • Third, many of them are very suitable for kids.
  • Forth, the Swedes take pride in their museums and you can see that.
  • Fifth, admission is free or low.
  • Below you will find a Top-10 of museums in Stockholm, listed in no particular order.

    Nationalmuseet (National Museum)
Sweden’s largest art collection is found here in the national museum: 16,000 paintings plus over 30,000 drawings and art prints, from the late medieval period to the 19th Century. Artists? Gauguin, Renoir, El Greco, Rembrandt, Zorn, to name a few. The first floor is dedicated to applied arts, with furniture and tapestries. Overwhelming place for art lovers. Buy the guidebook, otherwise you get confused.
    Location: Södra Blasieholmshamnen.

    Skansen
The world’s first open-air museum, displaying Sweden in miniature. Wonderful place. More details here.

    Nordiska Museet (Nordic Museum)
Stockholms biggest museum of cultural history. Fashion, household objects, furniture, toys, photos: you name it and it’s there. Nordiska Museet was founded by Artur Hazelius who also started Skansen, and is housed in an extravagant Renaissance-style palace. Read more about Nordiska Museet.
    Location: Djurgårdsvägen 6-16, Djurgården.

    Vasa Museet (Vasa Museum)
Literally built around a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. It stayed in the mud for over 330 years. Then it was raised, restored and presented in its own home. You cannot only see the ship in all its glory, but also thousands of objects that were found inside. Read more about the Vasa Museum.
    Location: Galärvarvsvägen 14, Djurgården.

    You Want Free Admission?

Holders of the Stockholm Card get free admission to most museums in Stockholm. And that’s not all. Read about all benefits here.

    Millesgården
Carl Milles (1875-1955) was one of Sweden’s most famous artists, mainly known for his sculptures, but also an acclaimed painter. His former house, studio and gardens are now a popular museum. There’s also a replica of one of his best-known works, the Poseidon statue in Gothenburg. Strictly speaking this shouldn’t be on a list of museums in Stockholm, as it is in the municipality of Lidingö. However, it’s only separated from the city by a bridge, and easy to reach by bus and tram.
    Location: Herserudsvägen 32, Lidingö
