Stockholm’s Ekoparken – The World’s First National City Park

A national park right in the city's heart.

Stockholm is the only capital in the world with a national city park. It’s called Ekoparken in Swedish and it’s almost in the heart of the capital. You can enjoy it every day of your stay!

Ekoparken is like a national park, but only in the city: a legally protected landscape with a rich cultural and environmental heritage.

In 1995 Stockholm became the first to host such a national city park.

It is about 27 km² large, of which 19 are land and 8 water. It stretches out from the palace of Ulriksdal in the north to the islands of Fjäderholmarna in the south.

Ekoparken includes the popular island of Djurgården – the location of such famous tourist attractions as the Skansen open-air museum, the Vasa museum and Gröna Lund.

But Ekoparken is not only interesting for its museums and hundreds of historical buildings. It also has a unique biodiversity.

Some plants and insects are only found here, other species are rare. You can see the densest population of oak trees in Europe.

Ekoparken is the most frequently visited park in the country with 15 million visitors per year. Nine of every ten Stockholm residents get there at least once a year. Not only to go to museums, but also to sunbathe in summer, walk in the forests, meet friends .....

Go there and experience the amazing sensation of enjoying an oasis of pure nature, right in the middle of a city with 1.7 million inhabitants.

Admission is free. There are no gates; you may enter the park without realizing it.

If you want, you can join of many guided tours that take place in summer. Call 08-587 140 40 once you are in Stockholm for bookings and more information.
