Arlanda - The Stockholm Airport That Welcomes You In A Hall Of Fame

The Stockholm Hall of Fame at Arlanda.

Arlanda is the main Stockholm airport. Most international flights to Sweden arrive here. Arlanda is clean and safe, and definitely a pleasant place to welcome (or say goodbye to) Sweden.

If you enter the arrival halls of Terminals 2 and 5 you will immediately get a touch of Swedish flavor. These halls were adopted the Stockholm Hall of Fame. The name covers a series of portraits of famous Swedes greeting international travelers.

You will see pop icons ABBA, tennis legend Björn Borg, Alfred Nobel, actor Dolph Lundgren and famous actresses like Ingrid Bergman, Lena Olin and Greta Garbo. And, let’s not forget them, also the King and the Queen.

How To Reach Stockholm From Arlanda

Arlanda is located about 40 kilometres north of the heart of the city. Too far to walk so you need transportation to reach the capital.

The fastest option is taking the Arlanda Express train which takes you to Stockholm Central Station in twenty minutes. With TV screens telling you what the shares are doing at the stock exchange, it’s not a train in which business travelers get bored.

The Arlanda Express leaves from the railway station below the ground floor.

A cheaper alternative is provided by the comfortable Stockholm airport coaches.

During peak traffic the buses depart every ten minutes. You will find them outside Terminals 2, 4 and 5. To save time I advise you to book your arrival transfer ahead. It's also possible to book your departure transfer.

Car rental companies Avis, Europcar and Hertz all have offices at Arlanda as well, but first you have to find the car rental desks, which is less obvious than it sounds.

Shops at Arlanda You can even order an “ecotaxi” if you choose a taxi to leave Arlanda. Cars that are registered as ecotaxis produce less pollution. You will always find them at the front of the queue of taxis outside the terminals.

Taxi fares are not regulated in Sweden, so ask the cab driver if his company has fixed rates.

If you don’t visit the capital and go up north, you can take a high speed train (called X2000) or a long distance train. There are also local trains that stop at every small station, which are only recommended if you want to know how the average Swedish commuter looks.

Airport Facts And Figures

Arlanda welcomed its first passenger flight in 1960. It now has a total of four passenger terminals, five cargo terminals and three runways.

I’ve been at the Stockholm airport several times and, unlike the rest of Sweden, it can be a busy place. Yet I’ve never experienced the hectic sceneries of angry and annoyed passengers I’ve seen at other airports.

Airplane taking off at Stockholm airport. 17.1 million people traveled to or from Arlanda during 2005. Two out of three traveled on international flights. 72 airlines fly from Arlanda to 175 destinations of which 140 are outside Sweden.

With almost 50 shops and over 30 restaurants you won’t find any trouble spending your time while waiting to board.

By the way, the toilets are lovely. I’ve been at one (for the gents) in Terminal 5 where the walls were decorated with flowers. As if you were standing in the free…

Business travelers have every reason to like the Stockholm airport.

It has outstanding facilities like

  • 49 conference rooms for 2-700 persons
  • 6,300 sqm conference space
  • an exhibition hall for up to 1000 delegates
Pier F, known for its outstanding views, is used for large dinners and gatherings.

An Air Field In A Green Environment

As we’ve seen with the ecotaxi, Swedes take care of the environment and so does the biggest Stockholm airport.

Biofuels are used to heat the buildings and the water from a nearby lake is used for cooling. Take off charges are based on the environmentally damage of the particular type of aircraft. And these are only a few examples of Arlanda’s environmental policy.

No wonder the surrounding forests are still green.

Finally…

There’s another Stockholm airport, Bromma, which is close to the city center. However, chances are small you will land there as it’s mainly used for domestic flights.
