Do You Need A Sweden Visa Or A Schengen Visa?
A Sweden visa is required for nationals of many African, Asian and Latin American countries. You can obtain it through the embassy or consulate of Sweden in your country. A visa is a document or stamp that permits you to enter a country, and stay there for a limited time under certain conditions. Strictly speaking there is no Sweden visa, but a so called Schengen visa. One feature of the Schengen agreement is that some member states of the European Union have open borders. If you are allowed to enter one of the countries, you can visit the other as well. Nationals of EU member states and several other countries like the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore do not need a Schengen visa to enter Sweden. They only need a valid passport or (for EU citizens) a European identification card. Things become different if you want to stay in Sweden longer than 90 days. Then you need a residence permit. You will only get one if you can prove that you have a job or enough money. Apply for a residence permit on arrival in Sweden at Migrationsverket. One exception: nationals of Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland may stay in Sweden as long as they like. Citizens of Russia, South Africa and many other Asian, African and Latin American countries still need a tourist or business visa – unless they have a valid residence permit for another EU country. People from these states can also get a residence permit. However, they should apply for this before departure. If your nationality requires a (Schengen or) Sweden visa, contact the Swedish consulate or embassy near your home. Don’t wait too long with it. It is not easy to obtain and the paperwork may take weeks, sometimes months.
